Cafepress Announce Marketplace Pricing
Cafepress have announced the new retail pricing for the marketplace as of June first. The big changeover day when Cafepress will start to make even more money than before by by only allowing the shopkeepers a paltry 10% commission on items sold in the marketplace. If all goes well, not only will Cafepress be making more money item but will also be selling more items. By going well I mean for Cafepress not for the shopkeepers that they are taking a dump on.
Anyway, enough about that. Below are the prices they have initially chosen but they are subject to change with notice. (See at Cafepress.)
The starting retail prices for products in the Marketplaces are below. As we are doing price testing, be forewarned they will be changing and fluid not only for the initial testing, but moving forward as well. We will not always have advanced notice of when individual items may change from this schedule, nor will we be able to inform you of changes each time.
Please note: All sales made from the Marketplace will result in a 10% commission for the selling Shopkeeper.*
*Excludes Books, CDs, and Flip Mino cameras – their commission structure is as follows:
- Books and CDs will maintain the mark-up commissions as assigned by the Shopkeeper
- Flip Mino and Flip Mino HD still earn a flat $10 commission for Marketplace sales

See here — http://irregulartimes.com/?p=12558 — for comparison of these sale prices converted into the equivalent of “base prices,” then compared to the old base prices.
This isn’t just a move toward “consistency,” it’s now numerically speaking a clear move to higher prices for customers and higher profits per item for CafePress. Due to the large increases in price at a time of economic downturn, I am not certain that this will result in higher aggregate profit for CafePress.
I don’t really agree with how Irregular Times put that article together but I would guess the next move would be to raise the base prices of tees further eroding profits made from even our stores. In the future I wouldn’t be surprised if they went further and introduced their 10% commission to our stores as well. It is not that long ago that our volume bonus was taken away from marketplace sales so that is something else we have the potential of losing from our stores.
By simutaneously raising the prices and lowering the commissions, CafePress is acting in a way that, if legal, is blatantly unethical. It is also intellectually dishonest to call price-raising and profit-taking “price testing.” Nothing is being tested except CafePress’s ability to act in dishonest, unethical ways and still stay in business.
This is not the worst part of it, though. The worst part is that CafePress has disabled the ability to comment about this practice in their Forums, so even the shopkeepers cannot speak out about it.
I’m not sure that they have done anything illegal or unethical but dishonest? Yes, I think so. Greedy? Definitely.
Regarding their forums, that is their right. If someone came to your house and complained about the food and the way you made your bed you might not let them back in the next time.
Feel free to vent in the forums here though.
Lowering our commissions is just like taxing the very people who are making them money. It may make them more money in the short-run, but then it will have a long-term negative effect by driving us out of business or to their competitors.
Speaking of competitors, does anyone know of good alternatives to CafePress that do bumper stickers as well as t-shirts? I’m aware of zazzle.com.
I agree that is will probably have a very bad effect in the long term. You can check out the list of PODs on this page: http://pod.ruderetro.com/about/pod/
I hope you can find a suitable one.
I agree. I think this is horrible. If I take all my stuff off cafepress, will they still be able to sell it?
I think it won’t be immediately removed but no they won’t be able to sell it.
Spreadshirt is a good place – I have been there for awhile – you can earn 20% commission on a designer (customize your own clothes) shop – you also get to have a shop with apparel you have created. As with many places, you set your own commission – you also get to place your designs “out there” for other shops to borrow. Spreadshirt keeps track of everything for you. Quite easy actually. Their base prices in some areas are kind of on the spendy side (my opinion) like hoodies – but the t-shirts, etc are your average price. $9.00 and up
I do not like CP being able to put my items on whatever they want, compete with my own prices and sales to the point that I make basically nothing, and possibly alter/cheapen my images, including changing the colors if they want, for this purpose.
I may not want one of my paintings’ images sold on a BBQ apron, for instance.
I was furious to see that I recently made a mere 80 cents profit from the sale of a print of one of my paintings, as it was purchased through the Marketplace. I price my prints up about $4-$5. I do not want them given away, and cheapened like this. And my clients can find my store through my various links and word of mouth.
Most of my sales are from direct hits to my page anyway, I have a link to it from my main website, link in signatures I use on various forums, and word of mouth. I don’t make much from the CafePress store but it trickles in every now and then, and my clients like being able to purchase items so I plan to keep it open, for now. As a result of CP trying to screw the sellers over even more, as the prices we mark up from are already too high, I have opted out of the Marketplace program. It may be legal for them to do it, but it is certainly unethical. Their “base prices” that sellers mark up from to make their profit, are already high enough (they are not wholesale prices) and in fact for example I make $1 off a greeting card…and that’s if it’s purchase directly through my shop, not the marketplace!
